Breast Asymmetry

Breast Asymmetry

- January 7, 2018

When the breasts are of different size or shape, the situation is called breast asymmetry. Small differences in double organs such as ear, eye, breast, hand, and foot are accepted as natural in the human body, but distinct size and shape differences are accepted as asymmetry. Especially when the breast is different from each other in terms of the size of the bride, there are situations that disturb the self-confidence and affect the comfort of clothing and life.

Differences between the two breasts may be due to developmental, trauma or past surgeries. It may also occur after breastfeeding. In all cases, it is possible to provide symmetry with surgeries to be performed by plastic surgery. Asymmetry is sometimes only due to the fact that the size of one breast is larger than the other, and in most cases, the shape and location of the nipple is also different. Sometimes there is no breast tissue on one side.

Breast asymmetry surgeries are tough operations of the plastic surgery. The Surgery is not difficult for the patient since it is necessary to know the techniques for the protection of symmetry in the long run when each breast needs to be corrected with very different techniques, it is beneficial to go out with an experienced plastic surgeon. Good planning is very important in order to make the outcome of the surgery pleasant.

In the vast majority of asymmetry surgeries, both breasts require the operation.  Sometimes only symmetry can be achieved by applying breast prostheses in different sizes and heights, and in some cases, it may be necessary to reduce the size of one breast and placing a breast prosthesis on the other one. In this case, the size and shape will look similar in the early postoperative period, but differences can emerge in long term. In order to prevent this, applying a breast prosthesis by removing more tissue from the big breast is a predicted approach.  However, it may be necessary to add small corrections after 6 months in rare cases.

We recommend waiting until the age of 18 for improvements of developmental asymmetries. In cases such as Virginal Hypertrophy or Poland Syndrome, we are able to get the surgery done earlier than the age of 18.

It is enough to stay in the hospital for 1 night after surgery. The recovery time is the same as other breast surgeries. In any case, it is possible to return to work after 5-6 days.

Correction of the breast asymmetry will make the person psychologically more relaxed and will contribute to self-confidence.
